Michelle Weitzman's Run for Leukemia

At the beginning of this year, I sat down to write my New Year's Resolutions as I do every year. Most times I don't follow through with them - this year I vowed it would be different. In looking at the list I had created, I saw some contradictory goals: spend more time with my husband and children, find time for myself; continue to be involved in the community, simplify my life. Some of my goals kept reappearing year after year: eat better, lose weight, get back in shape. I vowed this year would be different but was challenged with the idea of how to accomplish everything I had set out to do.

On a recent business trip I happened upon an ad for Team in Training, the world's largest endurance sports training program in the world. It helps people like me, a novice, train for and compete in mararthon runs and walks, triathalons, and century (100 mile) bike rides. The tradeoff is that we, as participants, raise money to help fund blood cancer research and patient services and nearly 76% of the money raised is used to support patient services, education and research activities. Not only would I be raising money for a good cause, but I would also be able to achieve many of my personal goals, even the contradictory ones.

After learning more about the organization, and really pondering whether or not I could accomplish this, I committed to running the Dublin Marathon this coming October. My plan is to raise at least $4,500 to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and I feel good knowing that contributions like yours will go to a good cause. Since its inception, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has invested more than $280 million in blood cancer research and the results are beginning to show: the survival rates have increased dramatically in all age groups across all types of blood-related cancers.

To help keep me motivated, I will be running in honor of Robin Grasso, a 28-year old woman who suffers from Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). It is for her, and for others like her, that I will accomplish this.

I encourage you to come back often to see the progress I've made in achieving my fundraising and training goals.
